Withstand voltage

Updated 2026-10-27

Data records

  • Withstand voltage is a specified test voltage, above the normal operating voltage, that insulation is required to sustain for a set time without breakdown or excessive leakage current. A withstand test is a pass or fail proof test rather than a measurement of insulation quality. Source: Electrical Testing Reference editorial taxonomy, 2026-10 edition. Verified 2026-10-27. • In very low frequency test set practice a withstand test is configured as a single step at the required test voltage held for the required time, and the set can be taken directly to that voltage rather than stepped up through intermediate levels.
