- The test voltage of a glove tester is alternating or direct, a combination tester carries both supplies with a transfer switch between them, and the voltage is raised at a controlled ramp rate to the level set for the class of the item.
- Rubber gloves and sleeves are made in several classes, each tested at its own voltage, and an automatic tester selects the predefined test program for the class of the item loaded.
- The tester displays the leakage current of each item digitally and on a bar graph, holds the peak value, and when an item fails flashes the indicator at its position, sounds an alarm and shows which positions failed.
- An insulating glove tester applies a high test voltage to rubber insulating gloves, sleeves and blankets and measures the leakage current through the rubber, stressing each item beyond its maximum field use to confirm that it will withstand service; with the matching electrodes the same tester covers line hose, hoods and line jumpers.
- Gloves issued for service are retested on a fixed cycle, gloves tested but not yet issued carry a shelf life after which they are retested before issue, and blankets in service are retested on a cycle of their own; the intervals are set by the ASTM in-service standards, ASTM F496 for gloves, and enforced through OSHA 1910.137.
- A single-position fixture powered by an external high-voltage source tests one glove, sleeve or blanket at a time and is portable, whereas a multi-position automated tester fills, tests and reports on a batch of gloves and sleeves under microprocessor control.
- In a glove test each glove is filled with water through a tube and lowered into the tester's water tank, the water inside and outside serving as the electrodes across the rubber wall; water filling is bypassed for sleeve positions and for empty positions.
