Data records
- The accuracy of a digital multimeter is specified per function as a percent of the reading plus a fixed number of counts of the least significant digit, and its resolution as the number of counts the display can show on a range.
- Bench multimeters are specified by digits of resolution, offer faster reading rates, reading memory, data logging and remote-control interfaces such as LAN, USB and GPIB for automated test, whereas hand-held multimeters are built to withstand field conditions and are selected for portability and safety.
- A digital multimeter is calibrated at an interval set from the maker's recommendation, the criticality of its measurements and its calibration history; annual calibration is the most common requirement, a critical project may call for calibration before and after the work, and a meter that has suffered an overload or a physical impact is recalibrated regardless of interval.
- In the continuity check the meter is connected across a de-energized path and indicates a complete path on the display and with a beep, while an open path gives no reading and no beep. In the diode check the meter displays the forward voltage of a diode connected in the forward direction and an over-range indication when the diode is reversed.
- Beyond voltage, current and resistance, a hand-held digital multimeter commonly offers a continuity check, a diode check, capacitance and, with a thermocouple probe, temperature, selected with a rotary switch and function keys; the test leads move between the voltage-ohms terminal and a separate current terminal according to the function.
- The current inputs of a multimeter are protected by high-energy fuses because the current shunt is a low-resistance path: test leads left in the current jacks and then connected across a voltage source place a short across that source, and the fuse contains the energy of the resulting fault inside its sand-filled enclosure. Voltage inputs rely on high input impedance and overvoltage protection rather than fuses, and the replacement fuse carries the current, voltage and interrupt ratings named in the meter's manual.
- A measurement category marking such as CAT III or CAT IV, printed near the input jacks together with a voltage rating, states the part of an installation and the transient overvoltage for which the meter's input is designed; CAT IV covers the service entrance and outdoor conductors, CAT III covers distribution circuits and fixed equipment, and CAT II covers receptacle-connected loads. A meter is selected for the highest category in which it may be used, with a voltage rating that matches or exceeds the circuit.
- A digital multimeter measures voltage, current and resistance, combining the functions of a voltmeter, an ammeter and an ohmmeter in one instrument, and shows the result on a digital display. Its high input impedance keeps the meter from loading the circuit under test.
- A true-RMS multimeter computes the effective heating value of an alternating waveform and reads correctly on distorted waveforms such as the current drawn by variable-speed drives and electronic loads, whereas an average-responding meter is scaled to read correctly only on a pure sine wave and reads low or high on a distorted one.
