Voltage detector
Updated 2026-10-27
Data records
- Before a circuit is declared dead, the voltage tester is proved on a known live source or a proving unit, the circuit is tested, and the tester is proved again afterwards, so that a tester that failed during the check cannot pass a live circuit as dead.
- A high-voltage proximity detector mounted on a hot stick senses the electrostatic field around an energized overhead line, substation bus or switchgear and alarms with flashing lights and a tone when the field exceeds the threshold of the range selected for the expected voltage.
- A high-voltage detector attaches to an insulated hot stick by a universal spline or a shotgun adapter and is never brought into contact with the conductor; its sensitivity range is selected by a switch, and detection works on unshielded conductors only.
- Non-contact detection responds to alternating voltage only and depends on the electric field reaching the sensor, so a pen may give no indication on a direct-current circuit or on a conductor behind heavy insulation or shielding.
- A non-contact voltage tester pen senses the electric field of an energized alternating-current conductor through capacitive coupling, without metallic contact, and signals the presence of voltage with a light, a tone or both.
- A non-contact pen is a safety check for the presence of voltage; it does not test grounding or wiring faults and gives no measured value, for which a socket tester or a multimeter is used.
- A proximity detector carries a self-test position that energizes the complete sensing circuit, not only the lamp and buzzer, to show that the battery and the detector are working before the detector is raised to a conductor.
- A two-pole voltage tester indicates alternating or direct voltage between its two probes by light-emitting diodes or a digital readout, and commonly adds audible and visual continuity, a single-pole phase test and phase-rotation indication; a contrasting inner insulation on the leads makes damage to the cable obvious.
