Capacitive charging current

Updated 2026-10-27

Data records

  • Capacitive charging current is the initial surge of current that flows when a direct test voltage is applied to insulation, as the capacitance formed by the conductors and the dielectric charges to the applied voltage. It is highest at the moment of application and falls away quickly, before the absorption current has decayed. Source: Electrical Testing Reference editorial taxonomy, 2026-10 edition.
