PD inception and extinction voltage
Updated 2026-10-27
Data records
- The partial discharge inception voltage is the lowest applied voltage at which partial discharges of a specified magnitude first appear as the voltage is raised gradually, and the extinction voltage is the voltage at which they cease as the voltage is then lowered. The extinction voltage is normally the lower of the two, because discharges once started persist below the voltage needed to start them.
- The term is written PD inception and extinction voltage. Value: PD inception and extinction voltage.
- Off-line partial discharge tests allow the applied voltage to be varied, which helps in identifying the inception voltage and the extinction voltage. On-line measurements and monitoring with permanently installed couplers take the asset as it is operating, at its service voltage, loading, temperature and humidity.
