Dielectric frequency response

Updated 2026-10-27

Data records

  • Dielectric frequency response is the measurement of the capacitance and the dielectric loss of an insulation system over a range of frequencies that extends from far below the power frequency to above it. The shape of the resulting curve depends on the insulation geometry, its moisture content, the conductivity of the insulating liquid and the temperature, and it is fitted to a model to estimate the moisture in the solid insulation. • In field practice a dielectric frequency response analyzer measures capacitance and tan delta or power factor at many frequencies and fits the curve to a reference material model to report the moisture content of the solid insulation, the conductivity of the oil and the power frequency tan delta or power factor, each translated to a reference temperature. The method is distinct from sweep frequency response analysis, which assesses the propagation of a signal through a winding and gives a mechanical assessment of a transformer.
